John Tortorella's First Move With Vegas: "Go North" and Nobody Knows If It'll Work

John Tortorella didn't waste time diagnosing what's wrong with the Vegas Golden Knights. The new head coach took over a team that was sinking fast, and his first prescription was blunt: change the mindset entirely.

"Trying to get the right mindset, an aggressive mindset of playing north," Tortorella said.

That's it. That's the message. Playing north. Aggressive. A complete shift in how this team approaches the game.

Tortorella Arrives and Demands a Culture Reset

When a coach gets hired mid-season to salvage a sinking ship, the first thing he does isn't tinker with the power play or adjust defensive schemes. He fixes the head. Tortorella knows this. He's been here before. You change the mentality, you change everything that flows from it.

The Golden Knights' season was careening in the wrong direction when Tortorella got the job. His message is crystal clear: stop whatever you've been doing and start playing with aggression and intent. Stop playing passive. Stop hoping things break your way. Attack.

Vegas Hosts Calgary With Everything to Prove

The Golden Knights take on the Calgary Flames with Tortorella's new mandate already in place. This isn't just another game. It's the first real test of whether the coach's philosophy can actually move the needle with this roster.

For a team that was spiraling, a new voice and a new approach might be exactly what the room needed. Or it might be too little too late. We'll start to find out when puck drop comes against the Flames.
