Jorge Soler and Reynaldo López Threw Punches, and the Benches Cleared Fast

Things got heated in Anaheim on Tuesday night when Jorge Soler charged the mound after taking a high fastball from Reynaldo López, and the two ended up trading punches in front of both benches. The Angels and Braves had themselves a full-on brawl, with neither player connecting cleanly but the message getting sent loud and clear. Soler's helmet got knocked off in the scuffle, and both guys were tossed from what turned into a 7-2 Atlanta win.

The Setup: A History and Two Big Moments

Soler came out swinging, launching a two-run homer in the first inning against López. Then in the third, López threw a 96 mph fastball that drilled Soler. Two at-bats, two big moments. So when a high pitch came up and away in the fifth inning, Soler wasn't having it anymore. After the pitch sailed to the backstop, Soler stared López down, walked toward the mound, and things escalated from there. López was literally still holding the baseball in one hand while he threw punches with the other.

Soler explained his side after the game through interpreter Jobel Jiménez: "I asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn't like it. That's why I went out there." Soler also pointed out the numbers. He came into this matchup with a career 14-for-23 line against López, with five homers and three doubles. Add in the home run and the hit-by-pitch, and you get why Soler was fired up. "After the home run and getting hit by a pitch after that, and then he missed way too high and close to my head," Soler said. "At this level, you can't miss like that."

Two Sides, Two Different Stories

López told a different version. Through interpreter Franco García, he said he saw Soler staring at him after the pitch and called it all a misunderstanding. "On my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point. So, again, it's just a shame," López said. Braves manager Walt Weiss, who had been a bench coach during Soler's time in Atlanta, backed up López's story. "López is not throwing at him," Weiss said. "I don't allow our pitchers to throw at people just because they can't get them out. Our job is to get them out. But I understand why Soler got angry."

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki sided with Soler's frustration, even if he didn't think López did it on purpose. "I don't blame Jorge one bit," Suzuki said. "You get thrown at your head, you have a family, a career. It's dangerous." Both players were ejected, and Jeimer Candelario came in to replace Soler, striking out against reliever Tyler Kinley, who took over on the mound.
