Lionel Messi's Childhood Idol Is Coming For Him, And Pau Cubarsi's World Cup Mission Is About To Ignite

Yo, Seattle! You hear about this kid? Pau Cubarsi, just 19 years old, this Barcelona phenom is about to step onto the biggest stage in football, the FIFA World Cup, representing Spain. And he ain't holding back! He just unveiled some serious truth bombs about his role on the national squad and, get this, his childhood idol, none other than Lionel Messi!

This isn't just some rookie getting a call-up, folks. Cubarsi has already established himself as one of the brightest young center-backs in the game. He's showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, and the World Cup is his next proving ground. Believe it, this kid is ready to make a major impact!

"Age Is Just A Number" For Spain's Defensive Anchor

This isn't a surprise to anyone who's been watching, but Cubarsi has had a rapid rise over the last two seasons. Now he's heading into the World Cup as one of Spain's most important defensive figures, despite being so young. You think that pressure gets to him? Not a chance! The Barcelona star is absolutely embracing it. He told Mundo Deportivo that age is just irrelevant when you're out there on the pitch, and honestly, that's the kind of grit we love to see.

"At the end of the day, age is just a number. When you’re on the pitch, nobody looks at your age but rather at what you can do well," Cubarsi explained. That's the mindset of a winner, right? He's actively working on his leadership qualities, staying focused, and giving good instructions to help the team. Plus, Spain's got a strong Barcelona contingent, which Cubarsi thinks is fantastic for building chemistry ahead of the tournament. You love to see a squad clicking like that, don't you?

The Puyol Dream And The Messi Challenge

Of course, there are always adjustments, especially when you're playing for both a club like Barcelona and the national team. Cubarsi openly admits that Barcelona's style of play and Spain's approach under Luis de la Fuente are "two different styles." That kind of adaptability is crucial, especially on the world stage!

He's also clearly inspired by legends, reflecting on former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and his famous World Cup semi-final goal. Cubarsi dreams of a similar moment for Spain: "If it can be done, it would be magnificent. Firstly, because we’d already be in the semi-finals and that would be fantastic. And if, on top of that, I could help the team in that way, it would be spectacular." Imagine that, a 19-year-old dreaming of a semi-final winner!

But here's the real headline grabber: Cubarsi was asked about potentially facing Lionel Messi. The Barcelona academy graduate didn't hold back. Messi has been his idol since he was a child, and Cubarsi has never even seen him play in person on the pitch! And what's his take on facing his hero? "I’d have preferred to play alongside him on my team, but if I’m up against him, I’ll give it my all and try to defend against him as best I can," he declared. That's guts, plain and simple. Facing your idol, in the World Cup, and saying you'll give it everything to shut him down? That's the stuff legends are made of!

So, what's next for this phenom? Spain's FIFA World Cup opener is right around the corner. Cubarsi, this 19-year-old force, is stepping onto the biggest stage with immense expectations on his young shoulders. He's ready to lead, ready to adapt, and absolutely ready to face his childhood hero head-on. You gotta watch this kid, Emerald City. He's got that fire, that belief that makes you stand up and cheer. Can he help Spain make a deep run and perhaps, just perhaps, get that dream Puyol moment? We'll be tuning in to find out!
