Seven RBIs on a Cycle: Why Adrian Rodriguez's CWS Heroics Make That Mariners Loss Even Harder to Stomach

Holy smokes, Seattle, did you *see* what went down in the College World Series yesterday? I’m talking about Adrian Rodriguez from No. 6 Texas, who just pulled off an individual performance that makes you want to both cheer your head off and then immediately check if he’s eligible for the M’s somehow. This dude went absolutely nuclear, leading his Longhorns to a massive 14-2 rout over No. 7 Alabama. It was an offensive explosion that literally saved their season, and honestly, we could use some of that magic here in the Emerald City right about now.

Adrian Rodriguez Delivers an All-Timer When It Mattered Most

This wasn't just a good game for Rodriguez, it was pure legend status. He went 5-for-5 at the plate, ripping two doubles, a triple, a single, and then, for good measure, smashed a home run. Yeah, you heard that right, the kid hit for the cycle in a College World Series game! Only two other players have ever done that, making him the third. But wait, there’s more, because that wasn't even the whole story. Rodriguez also racked up seven RBIs and 12 total bases, both of which tied CWS single-game records. And the kicker? This whole unbelievable show happened in an elimination game. Texas was facing the end, and Rodriguez said, "Nah, not today." They chased Alabama starter Zane Adams after just 1.2 innings, tagging him for seven earned runs, and sent the Crimson Tide packing. It’s the kind of clutch performance that gets you hyped, wishing that kind of consistent, record-breaking pop was a daily fixture at T-Mobile Park.

Oklahoma Rolls, Sets Up Big Matchups

Over in the other Bracket 2 game, No. 3 Georgia ended up in the loser’s bracket after a tight 4-3 loss to Oklahoma. The Sooners came out swinging, grabbing a three-run first inning, and kept that momentum going with homers from Jaxon Willits and Brendan Brock. These guys are just scalding hot at the plate, with about a quarter of their season’s home runs coming in this NCAA tournament run! Plus, freshman right-hander Xander Mercurious was lights out on the mound for Oklahoma. He tossed a career-high 7.1 innings, striking out a personal-best nine batters to snag his first win. Oklahoma is now sitting pretty in the catbird seat for Bracket 2, waiting for the winner of the Texas vs. Georgia rematch. It’s going to be wild!

What's Next for the CWS... and a Rough Reality Check for Seattle

Play continues today at Charles Schwab Field Omaha with an elimination game between Troy and No. 16 West Virginia at 2 p.m. ET. That winner gets No. 5 North Carolina. Then, at 8 p.m. ET, we get the highly anticipated Texas vs. Georgia rematch. You know Adrian Rodriguez is going to be looking to keep that fire going. It's a slate of high-stakes college baseball, and man, it’s a blast to watch. However, seeing all that offensive firepower and clutch play from other teams just twists the gut a little harder when you look at our own Mariners. Seriously, a 10-1 final against the Nationals? One run? After seeing what Rodriguez did, it's a stark reminder that we need more than just hope for our boys in blue. We need some serious bats to show up, starting with their next game.
