Sorana Cirstea Just Beat the World's No. 1 Player and It's Her First Win Ever Against Sabalenka

Rome just witnessed one of those tennis moments that doesn't happen often. Sorana Cirstea, ranked 26th in the world, walked into the Internazionali BNL d'Italia and took down Aryna Sabalenka, the number one player on the planet. This wasn't some fluke either. Cirstea came back from down a set to close out the victory in straight sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Comeback That Shocked Rome

At 36 years old, Cirstea showed the kind of poise you only get from decades on the tour. After dropping the first set, she completely shifted gears. Sabalenka couldn't find her rhythm in the second and third sets, and Cirstea methodically pieced together the win. This marks the first time Cirstea has ever beaten the world number one in their head-to-head matchup.

Just How Big Is This for Sabalenka?

Look, Sabalenka has been nearly untouchable lately. Her last loss before this came all the way back in February 2025. That's months of dominance coming to an abrupt halt in Italy. When you're seeded first at a major tournament and you're getting upset in the Round of 32 by a 36-year-old ranked 26th, that's the kind of result that ripples through the tennis world. This isn't a slight hiccup. This is a genuine, legitimate tournament upset.

The draw at Rome continues to play out, but this result is the one everyone's talking about. Cirstea proved that age and ranking don't always tell the whole story when the moment is right.
