Sorana Cirstea Pulled Off the Upset Nobody Saw Coming Against the World's No. 1

Ranked 26th in the world, Sorana Cirstea just did something she'd never done before: she beat Aryna Sabalenka. And Sabalenka, remember, is the top-ranked player on the planet.

This wasn't some close match that could have gone either way. Cirstea took it in straight sets at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, winning 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the Round of 32 of the women's singles draw. The scoreline tells the story perfectly. Sabalenka dominated the first set with ease. Then Cirstea flipped a switch, took the second handily, and fought her way through a tight third set to seal the victory.

Breaking Through Against the Best

This was Cirstea's first career win over the world No. 1. That's the kind of moment that sticks with you. On any given day at a big tournament, anything can happen, but the No. 1 player in the world is the No. 1 player for a reason. When someone ranked 26th walks onto the court and leaves with the trophy match, it means they brought their A game and Sabalenka had an off day, or maybe both things happened at once.

The match played out in that classic tennis way where momentum completely shifts between sets. You could feel Cirstea building confidence as the match went on. By the time that third set rolled around, she had Sabalenka figured out.

What's Next in Rome

Cirstea moves on in the draw at one of the most prestigious clay court tournaments on the WTA calendar. This is the kind of win that can reshape how a player sees herself for the rest of the season. Beating the best player in the world, anywhere, anytime, is a reminder that on the right day with the right mindset, nobody is untouchable.
