Olivia Gaines, Dawn Staley's Protege, Takes Over NC Central Women's Basketball

NC Central University is bringing in a major coaching hire: Olivia Gaines, a former South Carolina guard and protege of legendary coach Dawn Staley. The move signals the program's commitment to building something special in women's college basketball.

Who Is Olivia Gaines?

Gaines comes from the South Carolina program, where she played under Staley, one of the most respected coaches in the sport. That connection matters. Staley has built South Carolina into a powerhouse, and Gaines spent her playing days learning from one of the best in the business. Now she gets her shot to lead a Division I women's basketball program at NC Central.

What This Means for NC Central

Hiring a Staley disciple is a statement. It means the university is investing in someone who understands winning culture at the highest level. Gaines carries that pedigree with her, and NC Central is banking on her ability to translate what she learned in Columbia into success in Durham. The program is tapping into a proven coaching tree.

Looking Ahead

This is the latest move in a wave of coaching changes across HBCU women's basketball. Programs are creating new opportunities for rising coaches, and NC Central just made a splash by securing someone with direct ties to one of college basketball's elite programs. Gaines takes over a program ready for her vision and her plan to compete at the Division I level.
