The Cougs Land a Champion

Think about it, an Oregon High School State Champion. That means Tessa Aberle isn't just good, she's elite. She's been dominating at the high school level, proving she's got the speed and the grit to compete at the highest stages. Bringing that kind of talent into the Washington State program for Fall 2027? That's a game-changer. It shows the future is bright for WSU swimming, and honestly, you gotta love seeing top-tier talent choosing to stay in our corner of the country, ready to make waves for a Washington school. This kind of commitment sends a message, setting up some serious potential for the seasons ahead.

Global Pool Report: Legends Retire, Young Guns Rise

But hey, while we're celebrating the future of Washington State swimming, let's take a quick dip into what else is shaking up the competitive swimming world, because there's always something wild happening, right? We've seen some absolute legends make big announcements. Bronte Campbell, one of the most successful women's sprinters from Australia, has revealed her decision to retire from competition swimming. And the hits keep coming, with two-time Russian Olympic gold medalist Evgeny Rylov announcing his formal retirement from competitive swimming on Instagram. Tough to see those guys go, true titans of the pool. On the flip side, new stars are shining bright! Josh Liendo absolutely crushed it, winning the men’s 50 freestyle in 22.50 on night two of the 2026 Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet. Not only that, he finished 2nd in the 50 back. Regan Smith is out there too, swimming two events on night three of the Longhorn Elite Invite after a very strong performance in the women’s 100 fly last night. Talk about keeping busy! Then you've got the next generation of college talent shaping up: Florida State added Winter Juniors Qualifier Nicolas Lee to their 2027 recruiting class, Winter Juniors Qualifier Dylan Stewart sent his verbal to Georgetown for Fall 2027, and Florida High School State Finalist Elise Panna verbally committed to Dartmouth College for Fall 2027. Panna dropped nearly a full second in both backstroke events as well as the 200 freestyle during the 2025-26 short course season, which is just insane progress. And globally? Japan’s 17-year-old Yumeki Kojima is already a two-time World Junior record holder and is now hunting Russian Kliment Kolesnikov’s WJR in the 200m backstroke, after ripping a 1:55.62 lifetime best. Meanwhile, Greece’s Apostolos Siskos is absolutely on a roll, dropping the #1 time in the world this year with a 1:54.12 in the 200 back in May. We even have MPSF ‘A’ Finalist Jack Boysen transferring from Wyoming to Texas A&M. The swimming world is constantly shifting, with incredible talent everywhere you look. It’s an exciting time in competitive swimming, both locally with Tessa Aberle coming to Washington State, and across the globe. We can't wait to see what kind of impact Tessa makes when she hits the water for the Cougs in 2027! Get ready to cheer, folks!
