Paul Rothrock Fires Seattle Past Sporting Kansas City in Early Season Showdown

The Sounders came out swinging on the road and got exactly what they needed: an early goal and a win to build on. Paul Rothrock opened the scoring in the first minute, burying a left footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner. That's the kind of fast start that sets the tone for an entire match, and Seattle made it stick.

Early Pressure Pays Off

This wasn't a lucky break either. The Sounders were pushing from the opening whistle. Cristian Roldan was winning free kicks in dangerous spots, and the team's attacking players were creating chances. Rothrock had already won a free kick in the defensive half just before his goal, showing Seattle was controlling the tempo early. Danny Musovski was involved in the buildup, picking out Rothrock with a dangerous assist that the Sounders winger finished cleanly.

Defense Holds Through the Battle

Sporting Kansas City didn't make this easy. The home side had their moments, winning free kicks in the defensive half and keeping Seattle honest. But the Sounders' defense, anchored by players like Snyder Brunell, stood firm when it mattered. There were some nervous moments,Jesús Ferreira had a left footed shot from outside the box saved, and Rothrock himself missed an earlier attempt that sailed high and wide. But you can't ask for much more than a road win in MLS, especially this early in the season when every result counts.

Next up for the Sounders is the chance to build on this momentum. Getting three points away from home is exactly the kind of performance that keeps a team in contention as the season unfolds.
