Roosevelt Legend Darnellia Russell Wins State Title as Eastside Catholic Coach
Two decades after leading Roosevelt High School to an improbable 3A girls basketball state championship as a player, Darnellia Russell just did it again. This time, she was on the sideline. Russell coached Eastside Catholic to the Class 3A girls basketball state title earlier this month, defeating top-seeded Bellevue 55-43 in the championship game. The Crusaders showed serious resilience this season, bouncing back from a rough 2-5 start and two previous losses to the Wolverines before that dominant title run.
The Player Who Defied the Odds
Russell's playing career is straight out of a sports movie, literally. Twenty-two years ago, she led Roosevelt to a fifth-place finish in the 2002 state tournament, but things got complicated when she learned she was pregnant. When she hoped to return for her senior year, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association ruled her academically ineligible because of the school she missed during spring break that year. So Russell appealed. When the WIAA denied it, attorney Kenyon Luce took her case pro bono and fought back in King County Superior Court. A judge granted a temporary restraining order, and Roosevelt kept playing Russell despite the risk of forfeiting every win if the WIAA won its lawsuit. A couple weeks after Roosevelt won the 2004 state title, both sides settled. Russell's story became so iconic that a documentary called "The Heart of the Game" focusing on then-Roosevelt coach Bill Resler, Russell, and those championship events was released four years later. "I have watched it too many times," Russell said of the film. "My daughters started crying watching it when they were old enough to understand it. Especially my oldest (Trekayla, whom Russell had when she was in high school), she cries and says, 'Mom, I love you so much.'"
From Player to Coach
After Roosevelt, Russell starred for two seasons at North Seattle Community College before briefly considering a move to Ontario, Canada for a four-year program. She decided against it and started coaching AAU teams while working. In 2012, Russell joined Shoreline College as an assistant coach and became head coach during the 2014-15 season through 2016-17. That experience lit a fire in her. "That job made me want to coach high school girls," Russell said. "I was getting kids who were not developed and had not been taught the basic fundamentals. It made me want to go back and help at that level before they get to college." When Garfield and Eastside Catholic both opened coaching positions in 2023, Russell applied to both. Eastside Catholic's hiring process moved faster, so she landed there. The move paid off immediately. After an 11-17 record in her first season, the Crusaders improved to 16-12 the next year, then finished 21-8 and won it all this season. Sometimes the third year is when great coaching comes to fruition.
