Roy Is Out in New York, and DeBoer Takes Over the Islanders Bench

The New York Islanders made a coaching change on April 5, 2026, firing Roy and replacing him with DeBoer. It is a significant move for a franchise looking to reset its direction, and it signals the organization is ready to make a change at the top.

Roy's Time in New York Ends

Roy has been removed from his position as head coach of the Islanders. The decision comes as the team looks to turn things around and inject new energy into the locker room. DeBoer, his replacement, now inherits a team that the organization believes needs a fresh start and a different approach moving forward.

DeBoer Takes the Reins

DeBoer is the new head coach of the Islanders. He will take over immediately and be tasked with steering the franchise in a new direction. The hire represents the organization's confidence that DeBoer can implement the changes necessary to get the team back on track.

This coaching change is one of several moves around the league as teams make adjustments during the season. It is a reminder that nothing is permanent in the NHL, and when results do not meet expectations, franchises are willing to make bold decisions to find a solution.

What Comes Next

The Islanders will move forward under DeBoer's leadership. The team will have an opportunity to show whether this change produces the spark the organization was seeking. For now, all eyes turn to how the new coach will integrate his system and begin reshaping the team's identity.
