Seahawks Release Rookie Running Back Damien Martinez

The Seattle Seahawks are releasing seventh-round rookie running back Damien Martinez ahead of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline on Tuesday. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports first reported the news on Twitter / X.

There were some high hopes that Martinez was going to be someone that wins over the 3rd running back spot on the Seahawks roster, but ultimately he lost out to George Holani. Martinez was coming off back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons at University of Miami and Oregon State.

He struggled to get off the ground in the preseason with just 24 carries this preseason, running for just 84 yards (3.5 yards per carry). This pretty much solidified the Seahawks have RB1 Kenneth Walker III, RB2 Zach Charbonnet, and RB3 George Holani.

Now there is a chance if the Seahawks are planning to have a 4th running back, then Damien Martinez lost out his spot to another rookie... 147 yards on 21 carries (7.0 ypc) for Jacardia Wright made it even harder to justify keeping Martinez on the 53-man roster.

Reports state that the Seahawks would like to have Martinez on their practice squad if he does not sign elsewhere.
