The Seattle Mariners have had a different second baseman every single year since Robison Cano has been gone. This time, the one-year project with Jorge Polanco has come to an end as the Mariners decline the team-option on his contract for the 2025 season.
The Mariners also announced that infielder Luis Urias went unclaimed on outright waivers and elected free agency. Their 40-man roster is currently at 36 players.
Mariners Opening Day 2B since trading Robinson Canó (2014-2018):

2019: Dee Gordon
2020: Shed Long
2021: Dylan Moore
2022: Adam Frazier
2023: Kolten Wong
2024: Jorge Polanco
2025: ?
The Seattle Mariners expected Jorge Polanco to be the the solution at second after FIVE straight seasons of new players playing 2B. The trade they made to acquire Polanco from the Minnesota Twins was a clear indicator that they were serious about him being the future second baseman for the Mariners...
Seattle acquired the switch-hitting Polanco from the Twins last offseason in a trade sending reliever Justin Topa, veteran righty Anthony DeSclafani, prospects Gabriel Gonzalez and Darren Bowen, and cash back to Minnesota.
Safe to say, it was another year of the Mariners MISSING badly on their second basemen acquisition.
PER MLB TRADE RUMORS: Polanco hit .270/.338/.455 in nearly 2700 plate appearances with the Twins from 2018-23, only once posting below-average offense in a season (2020). He wound up with career-lows in batting average (.213) and on-base percentage (.298). His .355 slugging percentage was exactly one point higher than his career-worst .354 from that shortened 2020 season.
Offseason is here, and it's time the Mariners figure out who will be at second base for the season. Cole Young is not ready most likely, the other option would be to put Ryan Bliss there, but there is obvious limitations... We aren't sure if they plan to make any moves to get a new 2B in the system or on the big league roster...
Only time will tell, once again, for the Seattle Mariners.
