Skylar Thompson Signs With Ravens and Diego Pavia's Path to Playing Time Just Got a Lot Harder

The Baltimore Ravens are adding another arm to their quarterback room, and it's bad news for undrafted rookie Diego Pavia. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Skylar Thompson is slated to sign with the Ravens after spending the entire 2025 season on Pittsburgh's injured reserve list due to a hamstring injury. Thompson appears to have made a full recovery and is now ready to compete.

Thompson Arrives With Experience Pavia Doesn't Have

Thompson isn't some unknown commodity walking into Baltimore. The guy logged 10 total regular-season appearances with the Dolphins from 2022-24, including three starts. That's real NFL experience. Pavia, on the other hand, is an undrafted rookie trying to carve out a role. Now Thompson is stepping into a quarterback room where Pavia was already competing with another undrafted rookie, Joe Fagnano, for the No. 3 spot behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. The depth chart just got more crowded, and Pavia's already thin chances got noticeably thinner.

The Ravens' QB Room Is Getting Deep

Baltimore clearly isn't banking on any single backup option right now. With Thompson adding his experience to the mix, the Ravens have three undrafted rookies and a proven veteran all jockeying for limited opportunities. Thompson may have come off injured reserve, but his track record gives him a leg up on Pavia in the competition for reps and game action. For Pavia to stick around and earn playing time, he's going to have to outperform someone who's actually been in NFL games before.

The Ravens' quarterback shuffle is a reminder that opportunity in the NFL is never guaranteed, especially for undrafted guys trying to make a name for themselves. Thompson's signing just raised the bar considerably for everyone else fighting for that third-string role.
