Spurs Just Buried the Trail Blazers 114-97 and Nobody Saw This Series Going This Way

San Antonio is heading home with the series wrapped up 4-1, and it was not close. The Spurs dominated Game 5 with a 114-97 victory that put the Trail Blazers away. Portland's season is done, and the Spurs are moving on with one of the most convincing series finishes you'll see in playoff basketball.

San Antonio's Defense Strangled Portland All Night

This game was never really in doubt once the Spurs got rolling. San Antonio came out firing in the opening quarter with 36 points, immediately establishing themselves as the hungrier team. Portland managed just 24 in the first quarter, and that gap only widened as the series went on. The Spurs held their ground through the rest of the game, ultimately outscoring Portland 114-97 to seal the series win and move forward in the playoffs.

Portland's Run Ends With a Whimper

For all of Portland's fight through the first four games, Game 5 was the moment everything fell apart. The Trail Blazers scored 30 in the fourth quarter, but by then they were already buried. San Antonio's defensive intensity in the middle quarters was suffocating. The Spurs won the second quarter 29-21, then the third 21-20. Portland never got into any kind of rhythm, never found the offensive flow needed to make a run.

What's Next for the Spurs

San Antonio advances and will wait for their next opponent. The Trail Blazers head home for the offseason wondering what could have been. For the Spurs, this convincing series victory sends a message: they came to play, and nobody was going to stop them from moving forward in the postseason.
