Taylor Gray Outwits Sheldon Creed Down the Stretch, Takes Kansas Lottery 300 in Late-Race Masterclass
Taylor Gray did what too many drivers at Kansas Speedway haven't been able to do this season: close one out when it matters most. In a gutsy call on Lap 143, crew chief Jason Ratcliff sent Gray to pit road during the final 95-lap green-flag run, and Gray held the lead through the cycle to edge Sheldon Creed by 0.718 seconds and score his second NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series victory of his career.
Creed had plenty to be happy about despite finishing second. By placing first among four eligible drivers, he earned a $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus for the first time in his career, cashing in on his fifth attempt at the prize. "It was a great day for us after starting in the back," Creed said, referring to his pre-race inspection failure that sent his No. 00 Haas Factory Team Chevrolet to the rear. "I definitely wanted to win and add to it, but the 54 (Gray) did a really good job short-pitting us. He ran a really good last 40 laps there and got through traffic quick."

For Gray, the victory felt overdue. "It's been a long start to the year, man, not that we're not bringing speed to the race track. It's just that things haven't really gone our way," Gray explained after climbing from his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. "So it's nice to finally be able to close one out." The win moved him up three positions to ninth in the series standings. Allgaier finished third, with defending series champion Jesse Love fourth and Brent Crews rounding out the top five. The race featured 11 lead changes among eight drivers.
Chaos Early, Drama Throughout
The Kansas Lottery 300 didn't lack for excitement. Just two laps in, an accident on the backstretch sent Carson Kvapil's No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet into a barrel-roll down the asphalt. Contact from William Byron turned Kvapil sideways, and Parker Retzlaff's car finished the job, launching Kvapil airborne. Safety workers righted the car, and Kvapil walked away to the care center. "It was actually not as bad as I thought it was going to be, once I realized I was going over," Kvapil said after evaluation.
On Lap 38, Jesse Love crowded teammate Austin Hill into the apron in Turn 4. Hill spun out and got plowed into by William Sawalich's No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, ending Hill's day in 34th place. "I'll remember this," Hill promised over the radio.
Gray, Creed, Allgaier, and Love all qualified for the third Dash 4 Cash race of the season at Talladega Superspeedway.
