The Bears Just Drafted the Hottest Safety in the Class and Chicago's Defense Just Got Way Harder to Beat

Let me be straight with you: I'm not sitting here pretending to be a draft savant, but Dillon Thienaman absolutely stole the show on day one. The Chicago Bears got their guy, and according to Jon Gruden, they got the best safety in this entire draft class.

A Swiss Army Knife at the Safety Position

This is the kind of pick that makes you sit back and wonder how a team gets this lucky. Thienaman runs a 4.3, which matters because it means he's got the speed to fly downhill or drop back into coverage without thinking twice. Better yet, he's got those Big Ten roots, so he's battle tested. The guy can line him up at the line of scrimmage or flip him back to play centerfield safety. That versatility is exactly what modern defenses need, especially when you're trying to disguise coverage and keep offenses off balance.

One Less Problem for the Bears to Worry About

Chicago needed a safety in this draft. Poles and Johnson made the call, and now that position group is locked in. You've got Bryant, Thienaman, Gordon, Johnson, and Stevenson on the back end. That's a solid crew. One position group is fixed, which means the Bears can shift their focus to the real gaps when they're back on the clock in the second round with picks 57 and 60.

Those draft capital remaining means Chicago can still hunt for some of the bigger needs on the offensive line and along the defensive line. But if you're a Bears fan, you're walking away from day one feeling pretty good about what the front office just put together at safety. Thienaman looks like a steal.
