The pinnacle of Washington high school boys' soccer arrives this Friday, May 30, 2026, as the Shorewood Stormrays and the Mercer Island Islanders clash in the WIAA 3A Boys Soccer Championship Finals. Set to kick off at 6:30 PM PDT in Puyallup, this highly anticipated match promises to be a thrilling conclusion to a remarkable season for both programs. Fans across the state are buzzing, ready to witness which team will hoist the coveted state trophy. Every player on the pitch has poured their heart into reaching this moment, making for an unforgettable championship experience.

Paths to Glory: The Road to Puyallup

Both the Stormrays and the Islanders have carved impressive paths through the demanding 3A bracket. Shorewood High School, from the competitive Wesco 3A Conference, is led by veteran Coach David Chen, known for his tactical prowess and ability to cultivate a stifling defense. Their journey included a nail-biting semifinal victory against a tough Lakeside squad, decided by a late goal from senior striker Mateo Rodriguez, who has been a consistent offensive force all season. The Stormrays' resilient backline, anchored by junior goalkeeper Ethan Miller, has conceded minimal goals throughout the playoffs, a testament to their disciplined play and relentless effort. Their physical play and organized structure have frustrated opponents at every turn. On the other side, Mercer Island High School, representing the powerful KingCo 3A League, has showcased an electrifying offensive attack under the guidance of Coach Sarah Thompson. Coach Thompson's Islanders demonstrated their flair for dramatic finishes, overcoming a two-goal deficit in their semifinal match against Roosevelt thanks to a masterful performance by senior captain and midfield maestro Liam O'Connell. O'Connell's vision and distribution have been crucial, orchestrating plays that often end with sophomore phenom Noah Kim finding the back of the net with his blistering speed and precise finishing. The Islanders' ability to maintain possession and launch rapid counter-attacks makes them a constant threat.

Key Matchups and What to Expect on the Pitch

This championship final presents a fascinating contrast in styles: Shorewood's defensive solidity against Mercer Island's offensive firepower. The battle in the midfield will be critical, with Shorewood's tenacious central players looking to disrupt O'Connell's rhythm, while Mercer Island will aim to control possession and unlock space for Kim and his teammates. The individual duel between Shorewood's defensive leader and Mercer Island's top scorer could very well decide the outcome. Fans can expect a high-energy contest, marked by tactical adjustments and moments of individual brilliance. Both teams have shown incredible heart and determination, making them worthy contenders for the state title. The pressure will be immense, but these Washington State student-athletes have proven they thrive in such environments, ready to leave everything on the field in pursuit of state glory. As the clock ticks down to kickoff, one thing is certain: the 2026 WIAA 3A Boys Soccer Championship will be a memorable chapter in Washington high school sports history, with the victors etching their names into legend and inspiring future generations of prep athletes.
