Puyallup, WA - The air in the Puget Sound is crackling with anticipation for what promises to be an epic conclusion to the 2026 WIAA 3A Boys Soccer Championship! This Friday, May 30, at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup, two titans of Washington high school soccer, the Shorewood Stormrays and the Mercer Island Islanders, will collide in a battle for state supremacy. It's a matchup steeped in talent, grit, and the relentless pursuit of glory, showcasing the absolute best of prep soccer in our great state.

The Stormrays' Dominant Ascent

The Shorewood Stormrays, hailing from Shoreline, have carved a path of pure dominance through the 3A classification this season. Under the shrewd guidance of head coach David Chen, the Stormrays have played with a disciplined defense and a lightning-fast counter-attack that has left opponents reeling. Their journey to the finals has been marked by remarkable team chemistry and the clutch performances of senior forward Mateo Rodriguez. Rodriguez, a prolific scorer, has bagged 28 goals this season, including several crucial game-winners in the district and state playoffs. His ability to find the back of the net under pressure is a testament to his tireless work ethic and natural talent. Coach Chen consistently praises his team's mental toughness, stating, "These boys never quit. They believe in each other, and that's why they're here." Their defense, anchored by senior center-back Isabella Smith and stalwart goalkeeper Leo Davis, has been equally formidable, posting 12 clean sheets.

Islanders' Resilient Journey

Across the water, the Mercer Island Islanders, led by veteran coach Sarah Williams, have demonstrated an incredible resilience and tactical brilliance to reach this grand stage. The Islanders' midfield maestro, junior Ethan Kim, has been the engine driving their impressive campaign. Kim's vision, passing accuracy, and tireless box-to-box work rate have dictated the tempo of countless matches, unlocking defenses with his precise through balls and delivering crucial assists. Mercer Island navigated a tough KingCo 3A league schedule, emerging victorious with a blend of attacking flair and staunch defending. Coach Williams emphasizes a possession-based game, and her team executes it with precision. "We trust our system, and we trust each other," Williams often states, highlighting the unity that defines her squad. Their path through the state tournament included nail-biting victories, proving their mettle under pressure.

A Clash of Styles for the Crown

This championship final pits two distinct, yet equally effective, styles against each other. Shorewood's directness and Rodriguez's finishing prowess will test Mercer Island's organized defense, while the Islanders' intricate passing and Kim's playmaking will challenge the Stormrays' disciplined backline. The midfield battle will undoubtedly be pivotal, as control of the center of the park could very well decide who hoists the WIAA 3A trophy. Both programs have poured their hearts into this season, with players dedicating countless hours to practice and preparation. This match is not just about skill, it's about heart, determination, and leaving everything on the field.

The 2026 WIAA 3A Boys Soccer Championship promises a spectacle of high school sports at its finest, a true celebration of the incredible talent and dedication within Washington State's prep soccer ranks. Expect nothing less than a thrilling, hard-fought contest for the state title.
