The Masterton Trophy Nominations Are Here, and Hockey's Best Character Stories Just Got Real
The NHL just dropped the Masterton Trophy nominations, and if you've been watching this season unfold, you know exactly what this award means. This isn't about stats or highlight reels. This is about the players who show up every single night with grit, determination, and heart, no matter what life throws at them. The league announced the nominations on April 8, 2026, and it's the kind of moment that reminds you why we love this sport.
What Makes a Masterton Winner
The Masterton Trophy celebrates perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. These aren't the flashy awards. This is recognition for the guys who embody what it means to be a pro, who overcome adversity and keep grinding. Every nomination tells a story of someone who refused to quit, who fought through injuries, personal struggles, or tough circumstances to keep playing at a high level. In a season where the Kraken and teams across the league have dealt with their share of ups and downs, this award feels especially meaningful.

While the Masterton nominations came down on April 8, the league is in absolute chaos mode right now. Teams are battling for playoff position with less than two weeks left in the regular season. The Avalanche and Hurricanes have already clinched their divisions. The Golden Knights are tied with the Canucks for the Pacific lead. Meanwhile, the Flames are missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The Kraken fell to Minnesota 5-2 on April 8, so every game matters moving forward.
What's Next
We're in the stretch run now. With playoff spots still up for grabs and teams fighting for positioning, the next couple of weeks will define entire seasons. The Masterton nominees will continue competing hard, playing the game the right way, and doing what they do best. That's what this award is all about.
