Seattle Storm Hits Pause on Awa Fam as Roster Questions Mount Early

The Seattle Storm announced a temporary suspension of rookie Awa Fam this week, a move that lands right in the middle of a rough stretch for the defending squad. It's the kind of news that makes you sit up and pay attention, especially when the team just dropped an 91-80 loss at home to the Golden State Valkyries.

What We Know About the Suspension

The Storm organization issued the temporary suspension to Fam as final roster cuts swept through the WNBA ahead of the 2026 season. This isn't an outright waiver or release, which means there's still some possibility of a path forward, but it's a clear signal that the team is making tough decisions on who gets to stick around. The timing matters too, coming as the league tightens rosters and teams lock in their rotation.

A Rough Start to the Season

That home loss to Golden State tells part of the story. Getting outscored 91-80 at what should be your fortress is never how you want things to go, especially when you're trying to build momentum with a young roster. Suspending a rookie in the same week only adds to the sense that things aren't clicking the way Seattle hoped they would right now.

Across the league, this is a wild week for roster moves. Golden State waived former Iowa Hawkeye Kate Martin in their final cuts, and teams are circling waived talent like Chicago Sky guard Hailey Van Lith. The Storm are making their own tough calls, and Fam's suspension is part of that housecleaning.

What's Next

For now, all eyes are on how the Storm responds to these early bumps. A temporary suspension leaves the door cracked open for Fam, but the team needs to figure out its rotation fast and start turning those losses into wins at Climate Pledge Arena.
