Jesus Rodriguez Delivers Walk-Off Single in 12th, Giants Edge Pirates and Show They're Not Done Fighting

The Giants needed a statement win, and they got one. After trailing deep into extra innings, San Francisco scraped together enough fight to beat the Pirates 7-6 in 12 innings on Sunday at Oracle Park, clinching the series with one of the most dramatic finishes you'll see this early in the season.

Here's where it got tense: the Giants were down 6-4 after the Pirates' Spencer Horwitz cranked a two-run double off Joel Peguero in the 10th. But Willy Adames answered back with a two-out, two-run single to left field that tied it up and kept San Francisco alive. The game stayed locked at 6-6 heading into the 12th, and that's when the real chaos started.

Rodriguez Gets a Second Chance, Makes It Count

In the 11th inning, things looked promising. The Giants loaded the bases after Pirates pitcher Yohan Ramírez hit both Matt Chapman and Drew Gilbert. But then 24-year-old catcher Jesus Rodriguez went down swinging on a sweeper and missed his chance to end it right there.

He didn't let that mistake define him. In the bottom of the 12th, Pirates right fielder Ryan O'Hearn couldn't track down an opposite-field drive from Chapman, and it dropped for a double putting runners on second and third with one out. Pittsburgh walked Gilbert intentionally to load the bases again, and this time Rodriguez was ready. He took a first-pitch sinker from Justin Lawrence and drove it to right field for his first career walk-off hit.

"I feel like the AB before, I just got caught up in the moment," Rodriguez said after the game. "I went too aggressive, and that's just not me. I'm aggressive, but not that aggressive. When I looked back, I just thought about that. I went in trying to be myself and hit the ball the other way. It works."

Rodriguez became the first San Francisco rookie to record a walk-off hit since Patrick Bailey on August 13, 2023.

Heliot Ramos went deep, and Adames chipped in with three hits total. Left-hander Ryan Borucki, a former Pirate himself, worked scoreless innings in both the 11th and 12th to give San Francisco the chance they needed. Chapman and Rafael Devers added three combined doubles. It was a total team effort in a game that stretched three hours and 51 minutes.

"I think we definitely stuck together, and that's all that matters," Ramos said. "We needed it so our confidence can go up. I feel like we showed what we're capable of when everybody plays together and puts good at-bats together."

Rodriguez should get an extended run now behind the plate. The Giants traded Patrick Bailey, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, to the Guardians, and fellow rookie backstop Daniel Susac is still working back from a right elbow injury.

San Francisco (16-24) heads to Dodger Stadium on Monday night to start a four-game series against the Dodgers. After a win like that, they'll take some momentum with them.
