Mets' World Series Dreams Collapsed: They're 51 Games Deep and Fighting Miami To Escape the Basement

Holy smokes, you gotta see what's happening on the other side of the country! The New York Mets, folks, THE METS, started this season talking World Series. They were dreaming big, probably already planning the parade route. But guess what? We're 51 games into the 2026 campaign, and those World Series dreams? Poof! Gone. Now, they're not just struggling, they're fighting for their lives to climb out of last place in the National League East, right there in the basement with the Miami Marlins. Yikes!

The Mets' Nightmare Fuel

Talk about a rough start! The Mets are 13 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves. After a brief escape from the cellar since April 28, they plunged right back in with a brutal 2-1 loss to the Marlins Friday night. That's three losses in their last four games, with their offense ice cold, outscored 20-13. It’s wild, because just before this skid, they actually looked good, going 6-1 over seven games and outscoring opponents a ridiculous 53-29. Where did that go? Manager Carlos Mendoza can only spin it so much: "You take the positives. Obviously, it's not what you want as far as the results, not getting the job done, not able to get the win." Freddy Peralta, 3-3 with a 3.31 ERA, starts today. He’s 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 11 career games against the Marlins.

And then there's the Marlins. They're not setting the league on fire either, 13 games back of the Braves. Consistency is a real problem, winning consecutive games only once this month and going 8-13. But man, did they lean on their pitching and defense Friday. Eury Perez and three relievers carved up the Mets, holding them to just three hits for that 2-1 victory. That win was huge, lifting them past the Mets into fourth place. It was their first win scoring two runs or fewer since April 28, when they edged the Dodgers 2-1. Perez was stellar, giving up only two hits, both to Juan Soto, over 6 1/3 innings. Shoutout to center fielder Jakob Marsee, who flashed serious leather with two highlight-reel catches. Manager Clayton McCullough nailed it: "To win games like that 2-1, you generally are going to need a little bit of luck on your side and also (are) going to have to make some plays." Max Meyer, 4-0 with a 2.85 ERA, is on the mound today. He’s 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in two starts against the Mets.

So, today is all about pride and avoiding that NL East cellar for these two clubs. Somebody's gotta end up at the very bottom. Meanwhile, back here in the Emerald City, our Mariners just kept on grinding! Our boys in blue, with Cal Raleigh behind the dish and Julio Rodriguez tearing it up in center, snagged a 2-0 shutout win against the Kansas City Royals. That's the kind of gritty performance we love to see! We're always looking forward to the next one, Mariners fans. Go M's!
