"Absolutely Magnificent": The Three Words That Tell You Everything About Cole Palmer's World Cup Snub

Alright, listen up, because Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink just dropped a truth bomb that should have everyone in the football world , from the Emerald City to London , talking about Cole Palmer. You know I watch everything, every game, every player, and when a legend like Hasselbaink speaks, we gotta pay attention. He said Palmer is "absolutely magnificent," and honestly, after a season of watching that kid, it's hard to argue. But here's the kicker: Hasselbaink would have taken Palmer to the World Cup, no questions asked, despite a seriously rough 2025/26 campaign for the Chelsea star. That's a strong take from a guy who knows what he's talking about!

The Legend's Bold World Cup Pick

Hasselbaink isn't just some pundit; he's a former Chelsea striker, a guy who knows what it takes. And he's a self-proclaimed "Cole Palmer lover," so you know his opinion isn't casual. In an exclusive chat with 10Bet, he flat out said he would have drafted Palmer for England and even played him on the right wing. Think about that for a second. This is a player who finished the 2025/26 season with 11 goals and three assists across 34 appearances. Those are solid numbers, especially considering what he went through. But Hasselbaink is looking past the stat sheet, he sees something special, something that makes Palmer World Cup-worthy, even with an "average form last term" and a history of injuries. That's high praise, and it shows the belief a true football mind has in the kid's raw talent.

Battling Through the Grind

Let's be real, Palmer's last season at Chelsea was a battle. He wrestled with "multiple injuries," including a nasty groin issue that kept him off the pitch for most of the first half of the campaign. This isn't just bad luck, either. Remember that brutal 2024/25 season? The kid barely got a breather, jumping straight from a hectic Club World Cup right back into Premier League action. You just know that heavy workload contributed to him picking up that worrying groin injury. While he showed some serious grit and good fitness levels at the back end of last season, playing 90 minutes in almost every league game he started, his finishing wasn't always there. The source admits his finishing was "far from impressive," and he "missed multiple big chances." It’s tough to watch any player fight through that.

A Hidden Blessing for Palmer?

So, Palmer is out of the World Cup squad. Sucks, right? But Hasselbaink, ever the pragmatist, thinks this might not be a terrible thing for the 24-year-old. He said, and I quote, "For Cole, and he might not feel this at this moment in time, it might not be a bad thing. He can have a good pre-season, concentrate on the coming season, and sort his body out." And you know what? He's probably right. Palmer's overall Chelsea career is still impressive, with 54 goals and 32 assists in 131 appearances since joining from Manchester City for £40 million back in 2023. This time away from the intense pressure of international competition could be exactly what he needs to "revitalise" himself. A full, uninterrupted pre-season to get his body right, to sharpen that finishing, and to hit the ground running for the next campaign? That's what we're looking forward to. Can he come back absolutely flying next season and prove Hasselbaink's faith was justified? We'll be watching every kick.
