Toppenish Claimed Five Straight Titles and The State Still Isn't Ready For What It Saw

Phew, talk about a weekend, folks! If you thought the only action in Washington was on the big league fields, you were dead wrong. The WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII just wrapped up at the Tacoma Dome, and let me tell you, February 21st, 2026, was absolutely WILD. We're talking pure, unadulterated high school wrestling greatness from the Yakima Valley, with Toppenish's girls' team pulling off a historic fifth straight team championship. Fifth straight, people! That's not a win, that's a dynasty, and the entire state of Washington watched it unfold.

Toppenish Girls and Boys Delivered Pure Domination

Seriously, Toppenish came to the Tacoma Dome and absolutely flexed. The girls' squad made history, securing their fifth consecutive team title. And leading that charge, a legend in the making: Adalyne Montiel. She snagged her fourth individual title, a moment that felt, yeah, a little different than expected, but a monumental achievement nonetheless. Talk about ending your career on top! But wait, there's more Toppenish greatness. The boys' team brought the heat too, battling their way to a second-place finish in the 2A category. And who was their cornerstone? None other than Justyce Zuniga, who also capped off an insane career with his own fourth individual title. His fast pace was unmatched, even if he did finally slow down in the final minute of that championship match. Four titles each for Montiel and Zuniga? That's the kind of stuff they write books about, folks. Pure Emerald City level dominance, even if it's coming from the Valley.

Valley Powerhouses Showed Up Big

But Toppenish wasn't the only Valley school making noise at Mat Classic XXXVII. The Wapato boys' team came in hot, leaning on their insane depth to defend their 1A team title. Built from the ground up, they reigned inside those circles, showing everyone that their previous victory wasn't a fluke. And get this: Zillah, despite being runner-up to Wapato again, still had three individual winners themselves. That's serious talent showing up! Over in the 2B division, the Granger boys scooped up a pair of individual titles, narrowly clinching the 2B team title. No drought here, just a powerful performance.

Granger Girls Had Us All Cheering

And you can't talk about Mat Classic without shouting out the Granger girls. They powered their way to a runner-up finish in the 1A/2B category, fueled by three incredible individual winners. Gabrielle Berger went out in absolute style, repeating her title win like a boss. Sonia Mendoza, after chasing it for four years, finally got the championship she deserved, and you know that felt good. And then there's freshman Vanessa Torres, who already launched her bid for the rarest of all prizes. Think about that: a freshman already gunning for legendary status! What a way to leave it all on the mat. What a showing for Washington's wrestling future, man. From the multi-year champions to the freshmen phenoms, the Tacoma Dome was buzzing. These young athletes brought the fire and reminded us all why we love this sport. We can't wait to see what these future legends bring to the mat next year!
