Trevino's Thoracic Spine Forcing Reds to Make Early IL Move
The Cincinnati Reds are dealing with an injury headache early in the season. Reserve catcher Jose Trevino landed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday because of a thoracic spine strain, forcing Cincinnati to shuffle its roster before closing out their series against Miami on Thursday.
What Happened to Trevino
The 33-year-old has been backing up regular catcher Tyler Stephenson through Cincinnati's first 11 games. Trevino has only appeared in three games so far and last took the field when the Reds beat Texas on April 4. Manager Terry Francona explained the issue didn't come out of nowhere. "It kind of reared its head in spring training," Francona said before Wednesday's game against the Marlins. "We felt like he calmed it down and then it's just been getting to the point where, if he catches, he goes back right to where he was. It locks up on him." The injury has clearly gotten bad enough that Francona decided it was time to shut him down. Trevino will head to Cincinnati for testing on Thursday to get a better handle on what they're dealing with.

The Reds called up catcher-infielder P.J. Higgins from Triple-A Louisville to take Trevino's roster spot. Higgins is set to catch Thursday's game against Miami, according to Francona. To make room for Higgins on the 40-man roster, the Reds designated infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand for assignment. Encarnacion-Strand came over from Minnesota and had a strong 2023, smashing 13 homers with an .805 OPS over 63 games. The last two seasons have been a different story though, as injuries and inconsistent production have kept him from making an impact. He started this year down in Louisville, so this move isn't a complete shock.
It's early, but the Reds are already dealing with roster complications. Thursday's game against Miami will be their first test with Higgins behind the plate.
