Two Seattle Mariners Selected As Gold Glove finalists

The MLB yearly selects three players at each position to be finalists for the Gold Glove Awards. The Seattle Mariners came out with two players that were finalists this year, Cal Raleigh and Dylan Moore.

Cal Raleigh was named one of three finalists for the American League Gold Glove at catcher while Dylan Moore was selected as a finalist in the recently created utility player category.

Via Ryan Divish: "Raleigh is considered the favorite to win after leading MLB in games caught (135) and innings caught (1,122). But it wasn’t just about volume. He was outstanding behind the plate. For the second straight season, he led MLB in catcher caught stealing, throwing out 26 runners on stolen base attempts. Since the stat was tracked, only Raleigh, Jim Sundberg (1975-76) and Hall of Famer Gary Carter (1982-83) have led MLB in back-to-back seasons."

Cal Raleigh is a finalist for the second time in career, after being nominated in 2022, while Dylan Moore is a first time candidate. Remember, Dylan Moore is a utility player, and this category is new by the MLB.

Two players that were surprises for the Mariners to NOT be nominated were 3B Josh Rojas and CF Julio Rodriguez, who were both among the statistical leaders in most defensive categories at their respective positions, were not selected.

The interesting part of this all, is that Cal Raleigh wasn't even using his own glove during this Gold Glove season. He was using Seby Zavala's because his glove was just not cutting it.

"With the glove I was using, I couldn’t shift my hand to the left to give myself more room to catch when it’s not hitting the fingers,” he explained. “Normally when you put your hand in a glove, it goes in straight in and there’s like a slot for each finger. Now I shifted my hand over to where I’ve got three fingers where the pinky goes."

The 2024 Gold Glove Award winners will be announced during a special edition "Baseball Tonight" broadcast on ESPN on Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. PT.
