Ty Simpson at No. 13: How the Rams Pulled Off the Draft's Best-Kept Secret

The Los Angeles Rams made their move on the QB market and did it quietly. While the rest of the league was watching Fernando Mendoza go No. 1 to the Raiders, the Rams quietly zeroed in on Alabama's Ty Simpson at pick No. 13 and kept the whole thing under wraps until draft day.

This is classic Rams strategy: stay silent, do your homework, strike when nobody is expecting it. Simpson was on their board, they had him graded where they needed him, and when the board fell their way at 13, they didn't hesitate. No leaks, no mock draft noise, no pre-draft hype machine. Just a calculated decision executed at the exact moment it mattered.

Why Simpson Makes Sense at 13

The quarterback class went fast in Round 1. Mendoza was off the board first overall, and Simpson followed at No. 13 for LA. That's two QBs in the opening round, which tells you something about how this draft class was valued. The Rams had their guy targeted, stayed patient, and pulled the trigger when the moment arrived. For a franchise that's always thinking two or three moves ahead, this felt like the right call at the right time.

What's Next

The Rams got their QB of the future and did it their way. Now comes the real work: getting Simpson ready to compete at the NFL level. The draft is just the beginning. How quickly he develops, whether he can handle the speed of the pro game, and whether the Rams made the right call at 13 will all play out over the coming seasons. One thing's for sure: nobody saw this one coming, and that's exactly how the Rams wanted it.
