Ty Simpson to the Rams With the 13th Pick: The Draft's Most Jaw-Dropping QB Move Nobody Saw Coming

The Los Angeles Rams just sent shockwaves through the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. In a draft loaded with quarterback talent, this move caught everyone off guard. Simpson wasn't supposed to go this early, and the Rams weren't supposed to be the team making the splash at the position. But there it is: another Alabama signal-caller heading to the NFL, and the Rams are betting big on him.

The Surprise That Changed the Board

When the Rams were on the clock at 13, nobody was predicting a quarterback. Other prospects like WR Makai Lemon (grabbed by Philadelphia at 16), TE Kenyon Sadiq (Jets at 16), and RB Jeremiyah Love (Cardinals at 3) were generating the buzz heading into draft day. But the Rams saw something in Simpson and pulled the trigger early. It's a bold statement in a quarterback class that included other notable prospects like Carson Beck and others who were being tracked as "plant the flag" options throughout the league.

What This Means for LA

The Rams just made one of the draft's biggest swings. Simpson joins a loaded first-round class that saw teams making aggressive moves all night: the Cowboys traded up to grab Caleb Downs at 11, the Saints nabbed Jordyn Tyson at 8, the Titans took WR Carnell Tate at 4, and the Raiders kicked things off with Fernando Mendoza at 1. In that context, the Rams sending their 13th pick to Alabama's quarterback room looks less shocking and more like they spotted an opportunity nobody else was ready to take. Whether it pays off? That's what the next few years will tell.
