Veronica Burton and Gabby Williams Combined for 50 Points and the WNBA Is Taking Notice

Okay, Seattle sports fanatics, listen up! While our Emerald City teams are always top of mind, sometimes you gotta glance around the league to see what absolute fire is getting lit elsewhere. And let me tell you, what just went down for the Golden State Valkyries is straight up jaw-dropping. Veronica Burton and Gabby Williams didn't just play well, they absolutely WENT OFF, combining for a mind-blowing 50 points in their 87-81 Commissioner's Cup victory over the Phoenix Mercury at Chase Center on Tuesday. You read that right, FIFTY POINTS from just two players.

Gabby Williams Goes Nuclear and Burton Joins the Party

Gabby Williams has been on a tear lately, and she didn't disappoint against the Mercury. She dropped 25 points in the contest, showing off some serious offensive firepower. Remember, this isn't even her *absolute* career-high, as she put up a staggering 27 points in a tough loss to the Las Vegas Aces recently. So she's consistently delivering at an elite level. But the real story here is the dynamic duo. Right there with her, Veronica Burton tied her season-high, also pouring in 25 points. When two players are hitting for 25 each, combining for half a hundred, that’s not just a good game, that's a statement.

This Commissioner's Cup Win Was Earned

The Valkyries needed every single one of those 50 points, too, because the Mercury weren't going down without a fight, keeping the game tight at 87-81. This wasn't some blowout, this was a battle in the Commissioner's Cup. Head Coach Natalie Nakase must be thrilled with her team's fight, especially with Nadia Fingall recently signing to a rest-of-season contract to bolster the squad. We've seen other players like Zandalisini stepping up with a season-high 18 points recently, so this team clearly has depth, but when Burton and Williams are clicking like this, they’re just on another level. This squad is playing for "Youth UpRising" in this Commissioner's Cup, and they're definitely giving the kids something to cheer about. What's next for the Valkyries? They've got a quick turnaround with the Los Angeles Sparks coming to town on Tuesday, June 16, and then the Dallas Wings on Thursday, June 18. With Burton and Williams playing like this, the WNBA better be ready. We'll be keeping an eye on these two from the Emerald City, because performances like that make you stop and pay attention!
