Voi Tunuufi, Washington Huskies Defensive Lineman, Dead at 23 in Car Accident

The Seattle area lost a piece of college football history this week. Voi Tunuufi, a former Washington Huskies defensive lineman who spent four seasons in a Huskies uniform, has passed away at just 23 years old. His sister, Sanita Tunuufi, confirmed to the Seattle Times that he died in a car accident on Sunday.

The University of Washington released a statement honoring their former player: "Our hearts are with the Tunuufi family, his loved ones and every brother who wore the W beside him. Forever in The Pack."

A Defensive Line Force Built Over Four Years

Tunuufi made 52 appearances for the Huskies after arriving from East High in Salt Lake City. He played under three different head coaches during his time in Seattle: Jimmy Lake, Kalen DeBoer, and Jedd Fisch. By his senior year, his versatility had turned him into a crucial piece of the defensive line rotation.

The numbers tell the story of a productive college career. Tunuufi made 14 starts, racked up 86 tackles, and recorded 15.5 tackles for loss. He added 12.5 sacks, two passes defended, and forced a fumble. His last game in a Huskies uniform came in the 2024 Sun Bowl.

After his final season, Tunuufi declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and worked out at Washington's Pro Day. The NFL didn't call his name, and he didn't get a rookie minicamp invite either. But that didn't stop him. He stayed in shape and was working toward opportunities in the CFL or UFL, determined to keep playing the game he loved.

His high school coach, Brandon Matich, remembered Tunuufi with deep affection. "He's the best football player I ever coached," Matich said. "And he was an even better person. Everybody loved Voi. The calls I've gotten from people I haven't heard from in years have been reaching out. He was a powerful personality."

Matich noted that Tunuufi was the first freshman to start for him and one of only two players to start all four years during his 15-year tenure at East High.

Our hearts go out to the Tunuufi family during this incredibly difficult time.
