7-Footer Maper Maker Coming to Arkansas This Weekend, and John Calipari Has Bigger Worries

Arkansas basketball is hosting former four-star center Maper Maker on a visit this weekend, sources confirmed Thursday afternoon. The 7-foot, 200-pound prospect was a four-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 27 overall center in the cycle according to 247Sports. He was also rated as the No. 138 overall composite player in the class and No. 25 center in the 247Sports industry-generated composite rankings.

Instead of heading straight to college, Maker spent last season playing prep basketball in Australia for AUNZ Prep. He recently wrapped up a visit to Memphis with coach Penny Hardaway before setting his sights on Fayetteville. The guy is clearly getting serious looks from major programs.

Maker Put on a Show Down Under

Back in February, Maker's AUNZ Prep squad traveled to Arizona to face prep teams in Mesa. Maker led his team to a perfect 4-0 weekend and absolutely went off in one game: 35 points in a 73-71 win over AZ Compass Grind. Even crazier, his team was down 58-47 with nine minutes left. Maker scored 17 of his 35 points in that final stretch to pull off the comeback. The kid can flat out score when it matters.

Before heading to Australia, Maker was a fixture on the Arizona prep circuit, playing for Bella Vista Prep in Scottsdale. Back at the U16 NCAA Basketball Academy in Memphis in July 2023, 247Sports evaluator Adam Finkelstein highlighted exactly what makes Maker special: "Maker's talent has been glaringly obvious. The 7-footer showed a terrific combination of mobility and touch for his size as he covered the court with exceptional fluidity and showed a soft scoring touch, not just at the rim but even facing up."

Calipari's Got Beef With the Real Problem

While the Maker visit is solid news for Arkansas, head coach John Calipari is clearly frustrated about something much bigger: the NCAA's decision to expand the tournament from 68 to 76 teams starting in the 2026-27 season. Calipari is among elite coaches like Mark Few, Dan Hurley, Tom Izzo, and Brad Underwood who are openly opposed to the expansion.

That said, Calipari told CBS Sports analyst Matt Norlander he could get on board if non-Power Four teams got guaranteed at-large spots. "I am a big believer in the idea that if it's not broke, don't fix it," Calipari said. "Having said that, if we are to expand, my hope is that at least half the spots are held for non-Power Four teams."

But his real issue? The NCAA is focused on the wrong problem. "Our main focus should be on fixing the transfer rules," Calipari told Norlander. "Which would help not only all the teams and athletes in our sport but teams in every sport. And I'll say it again: That's where our energy should be focused."
