Adalyne Montiel And Justyce Zuniga Made History In Tacoma, And The Rest Of Washington Is Still Processing It

Alright, Seattle! You won't believe what went down in our own backyard this past weekend! The Tacoma Dome, that hallowed ground we know so well, just witnessed something absolutely WILD at the WIAA Mat Classic XXXVII on Saturday, February 21, 2026. We're talking LEGACY, folks. Toppenish's Adalyne Montiel and Justyce Zuniga both walked out of there with their FOURTH individual state titles. Seriously, can you even wrap your head around that level of dominance? If you weren't paying attention, you missed some real history!

The Toppenish Girls Just Built An Empire

Listen up, because the Toppenish girls' wrestling program isn't just winning, they're building an empire. Adalyne Montiel didn't just snag a championship, she capped off her career with her *fourth* individual title! The source says she celebrated it a little differently than expected, but a fourth title is a fourth title! Her individual glory was part of a larger story, as the Toppenish girls powered their way to their *fifth straight team championship*. Yeah, you read that right. FIVE. STRAIGHT. That kind of consistent excellence? Pure dominance right here in Washington.

Justyce Zuniga's Unstoppable Pace

And don't even get me started on the Toppenish boys! While their squad finished a strong second place in the 2A category, their own superstar, Justyce Zuniga, matched Montiel's incredible feat. He also claimed his fourth individual title on Saturday! The report talks about his "dominant wrestling career built around a fast pace virtually no one could match." To slow down for the final minute of a career like that? That's the stuff of legends, Emerald City. Two four-time champs from *one school* in one year? That's just insane. What an absolute performance in Tacoma.

Other Teams Brought The Heat To Tacoma

But it wasn't *all* Toppenish, even if it felt like it sometimes! Wapato's boys showed us how to build a team from the ground up, leaning on their incredible depth to defend their 1A team title. And those Zillah boys? They were runner-up again in 1A, but still brought home three individual winners. The Granger boys clinched the 2B team title, snatching a pair of individual titles along the way. On the girls' side, Granger's trio of winners, Gabrielle Berger (a repeat champ!), Sonia Mendoza (finally getting her title after four years, talk about grit!), and freshman Vanessa Torres (already launching her bid for the rarest of all prizes!), pushed them to a runner-up finish in 1A/2B. So much talent exploding in the Tacoma Dome! What a weekend for Washington wrestling! When you see this kind of raw talent and relentless drive on display at the Tacoma Dome, it makes you incredibly proud of our state's athletes. With multi-time champions like Montiel and Zuniga setting the bar, and powerhouse programs like Toppenish, Wapato, and Granger showing up huge, you know the future of wrestling in Washington is absolutely LOCKED IN. We'll be keeping an eye on these names, because performances like these don't just happen; they're built on years of hard work, and that's exactly the kind of grit we love to see in the Pacific Northwest. Can't wait to see what they do next!
