Fernando Mendoza Left, and Nobody In College Football Is Ready For What Indiana's Building

Alright, so we've gotta talk about Indiana. I know, not our usual Seahawks or Mariners deep dive, but what Curt Cignetti is cooking over there? It’s something else, and it absolutely catches your eye, even if you bleed green and blue like we do. Fernando Mendoza, their quarterback, is out the door, right? Usually, that's a gut punch for any program. But guess what? Indiana is not just shrugging it off, they're straight-up thriving, and the college football world better take notice because Cignetti is building something different.

Hoover's Ready To Take The Reins

So, Mendoza's gone, but the Hoosiers' QB plan hasn't even slowed down. How? It's all about Josh Hoover stepping in, and this dude looks like a perfect fit. The staff learned from past depth issues, focusing hard on bringing in transfer experience and guys ready to roll immediately. CBS Sports' Cody Nagel even called Mendoza a "system quarterback" while hyping Hoover's production at TCU. He sees Hoover as a seamless fit in Cignetti's offense, a ready-made piece for continuity, familiar with high-volume offensive schemes. You love to see a coaching staff with a clear vision, right?

The Roster Is Stacked Up

But it's not just about the quarterback. What Cignetti has done with the entire Indiana roster is wild. They’ve seriously ramped up recruiting, pulling in way more overall talent and adding much-needed depth. Samuel Recker, an analyst on The College Football with Sam, couldn't stop talking about it. He stressed how much Indiana has grown under Cignetti in terms of team talent and recruiting. Recker even said, "Indiana, from a team talent and recruiting standpoint, is more talented this year than last year, and that’s only going to continue in the future. And I am a believer that recruiting matters. Even last year for Indiana, think about it... their starter to backup drop off was bigger than at most schools, and recruiting played a part in that." That's real talk right there. Hoover's now got elevated expectations, but he's surrounded by a much more talented squad. Talk about a glow-up for the program!

Cignetti's Laser Focus

And what makes Cignetti's work even more impressive? He’s totally locked in on what matters: his team. The dude is actively staying out of all the drama around expanding the College Football Playoff. While the ACC, Big 12, and American Football Coaches Association are chiming in, and even Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti backs the idea for the future, Cignetti isn't getting caught up in that noise. He shared his honest opinion, saying, "I don’t direct my attention to things I really have no control of." That’s the kind of unbothered mindset you want from your head coach, someone totally focused on what they can control. The CFP is staying a 12-team format for this season anyway, so why waste energy? This focused leadership is exactly what’s driving Indiana’s improvement. It really makes you think about how crucial that kind of clarity is for building a winning program. So, as Indiana looks ahead to the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Josh Hoover and how this deeper, more talented team performs. With Cignetti at the helm, it’s clear they’re not just hoping for the best, they’re actively building it. We'll be watching to see how this all shakes out, because good football is good football, no matter where it's played!
