Former PM Justin Trudeau Snubbed Canada's World Cup Opener: Why Canadians Are Seriously Unsettled

Okay, you guys are NOT gonna believe this story from the opening day of the 2026 World Cup. It’s absolutely wild! While Canada was kicking off their tournament run in Toronto, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the guy who was in charge when Canada got named a co-host for this North American World Cup, was nowhere to be found. Seriously, he completely ghosted his own country's debut match, and you gotta ask why?

Instead of being there for Canada’s 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Trudeau, who is 54, was chilling out in Inglewood, California. You know, where the US played Paraguay? The United States pulled off a 4-1 victory, and guess who was front row, or rather, in a private box, holding hands? None other than Justin Trudeau and his superstar girlfriend, Katy Perry. Yeah, THAT Katy Perry. She was part of the pre-match opening ceremony in Inglewood, and he was there as her ultimate fanboy. Talk about choosing love over country on the biggest global stage!

Love Over Country: The Ultimate World Cup Sacrifice?

This isn't some casual fling, folks, this is the real deal, and it’s been building fast. Trudeau and Perry, who is 41, went on their first date way back last July, and by fall, they were officially a couple. The relationship really went public around the first of this year when Perry made it official on social media. Just last week, they even made their red carpet debut together at the Tribeca Festival. This was for the premiere of her film, "Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour - Live from Paris." While there, Perry had an on-stage conversation with People, and she didn’t hold back, calling Trudeau "the love of my life." She even added, "I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life. I am very in love." Can you imagine? Publicly declaring that kind of intense love, then skipping your nation's biggest soccer moment for it? It’s a statement, for sure.

The Canadian Backlash Is Heating Up

You can bet Canadians on social media were NOT happy about this. And honestly, who can blame them? This guy was literally Prime Minister when Canada secured its spot as a co-host for this whole North American World Cup thing. You’d think someone who played such a pivotal role in bringing the tournament to his country would be front and center, repping his nation and showing support during its opening game. But nope, he chose Hollywood. His absence in Toronto has really unsettled a lot of folks back home. It's one thing to have a high-profile relationship, it's another to ditch a global event you helped usher in for it. This isn't just about a soccer game, it’s about national pride and perceived priorities, right? The optics are tough to ignore when the country is buzzing with World Cup excitement.

So, as the World Cup really gets going, the big question isn't just about who’s going to lift the trophy, but how this whole dramatic love story is going to play out for Trudeau and his standing back in Canada. Are fans going to forgive him for what many see as a major snub? What do you guys think this means for his public image?
