Fred VanVleet's ACL Tear in the Bahamas: How the Rockets' Championship Dream Fell Apart Before Training Camp

The Houston Rockets walked into September thinking they'd finally cracked the code. They'd won 52 games, snagged the No. 2 seed in the West, and then got blindsided by the seventh-seeded Golden State Warriors in seven games. That stung. The front office knew what was missing: a true superstar to pair with their young core. Enter Kevin Durant. After trading for him in late June, the Rockets suddenly looked like contenders again. Durant plus Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Reed Sheppard? That's a legitimate championship roster. And Fred VanVleet, the veteran point guard who could handle the locker room while Durant handled the scoring? The fit looked perfect.

Then VanVleet organized a players-only mini-camp at Baha Mar in Nassau for late September. It was supposed to be team-building before training camp. Vacation vibes mixed with basketball work. The organization was just a week away from the grind. Jeff Green was there. Everyone was ready to go. But in a pickup game, something happened that nobody saw coming. VanVleet went down. At first, Thompson thought it was just a rolled ankle. Green figured he'd walk it off. "It was like something that you can't predict and you can't fathom," Green told ESPN. "It was really tough because he's our captain on and off the court."

The tests came back brutal: a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. VanVleet was out. The season the Rockets had imagined when they traded for Durant vanished in one moment. A championship-caliber roster suddenly faced a massive leadership void with their veteran point guard sidelined. The narrative flipped from "contention" to "how do we survive this?"

Houston was about to find out that even the best-laid plans can collapse before the first official practice ever tips off.
