Gabe Alvarez Is Out as Toledo Manager and Mike Hessman Steps In

The Detroit Tigers made a move in their minor league system on May 5, 2026, firing Triple-A Toledo manager Gabe Alvarez. Mike Hessman will take over as interim manager of the affiliate. It's a roster shuffle that signals changes are coming down the pipeline in Detroit's organizational structure.

What Triggered the Move

The Tigers didn't announce specific reasons for the dismissal, but the timing matters. This came as the organization dealt with multiple injury concerns at the big league level, including Tarik Skubal heading to the injured list for an elbow procedure. When injuries start piling up in Detroit, the front office gets aggressive about moving pieces around, and this swap in Toledo fits that pattern.

Hessman Takes the Interim Role

Mike Hessman, who was already in the Tigers' minor league system, is now managing the Toledo affiliate on an interim basis. This is a common move when an organization needs immediate stability at Triple-A. Hessman steps into a role that directly impacts Detroit's depth at the big league level. Any prospects developing under him could be called up if injuries continue to mount, making this more than just a minor league decision.

The Tigers are clearly evaluating who can lead the Triple-A operation effectively. Hessman now has the chance to prove he's the right fit going forward as Detroit navigates a season where injuries are forcing them to get creative with their roster management.
