Igor Shesterkin, the New York Rangers' dynamic netminder, currently holds one major NHL MVP award: the Vezina Trophy. He captured this prestigious honor, awarded to the league's best goaltender, following his utterly dominant performance in the 2021-2022 season. While he has one Vezina, it's crucial to remember he was also a finalist for the highly coveted Hart Memorial Trophy that same year, given to the league's most valuable player, ultimately finishing third in voting behind Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid.
Shesterkin's Vezina-Winning Season
The 2021-2022 campaign was truly a masterclass for Shesterkin. He posted a remarkable 36-13-4 record with an astonishing 2.07 goals-against average (GAA) and a league-leading .935 save percentage across 53 games. These weren't just good numbers; they were historically great, reminiscent of legendary goaltending seasons. He led the league in both GAA and save percentage among goalies who played at least 25 games, carrying a Rangers team that often relied heavily on his heroics to secure wins and climb to second place in the Metropolitan Division. His ability to consistently make highlight-reel saves, particularly in high-danger situations, was a testament to his elite skill and composure.
What made Shesterkin so special during that MVP season wasn't just his statistical dominance, but his unique blend of athleticism, positioning, and competitive fire. He has an uncanny ability to read the play, anticipating shots and making seemingly impossible saves look routine. Beyond the numbers, Shesterkin simply elevates his team's performance, giving them a chance to win every single night. His incredible lateral movement, quick glove, and calm demeanor under pressure solidified his status as one of the NHL's premier goaltenders, a true game-changer who can single-handedly swing the momentum of a contest. His impact on the Rangers' deep playoff run that year, taking them to the Eastern Conference Final, further underscored his invaluable contribution.
