J.T. Poston Played 33 Holes and Nobody in Golf Is Ready For His U.S. Open Run

Alright, listen up, Emerald City! You are NOT going to believe the wild ride to the 126th U.S. Open that just went down. The United States Golf Association, the USGA, just dropped the final list for Shinnecock Hills, and man, some of these guys earned their way in with absolute grind. We've got 156 players locked in, but how two of these dudes, J.T. Poston and Bud Cauley, snagged their spots is seriously next level. Talk about playing with fire, these guys just turned it into a full-blown inferno!

Poston's Marathon to Shinnecock

Seriously, could you imagine this kind of hustle? J.T. Poston, out of Hickory, North Carolina, just clinched a full exemption into the U.S. Open based on his Official World Golf Ranking. But here’s the kicker: this dude moved up a ridiculous 56 spots in just two weeks to land at No. 38 after he *won* the Memorial Tournament. Get this, due to insane weather delays, Poston had to play a marathon 33 holes on Sunday, June 7, knowing full well he had U.S. Open Final Qualifying, "Golf’s Longest Day," scheduled for 36 holes in Columbus, Ohio, the very next day! The guy basically played a full golf tournament and a half in one day, *then* won another event to make sure he didn't need to do the final qualifier. That's pure grit, people. The 33-year-old is now set for his seventh U.S. Open, with three made cuts, and his best finish was a T32 back in 2024. That kind of mental toughness, playing through that exhaustion, that's what we love to see!

Cauley's Comeback After a Qualifier Heartbreaker

And if you thought Poston's story was wild, get a load of Bud Cauley. This 36-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, also earned an exemption via the OWGR. He jumped 28 spots to No. 40 after snatching his first PGA TOUR win at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday. Now here’s the unbelievable part: before he absolutely went off and won in Canada, Cauley *fell in a 4-for-1 playoff* for the second alternate spot at a final qualifier. He was literally battling for a backup position on "Golf's Longest Day" in Ohio, and then a week later, he's winning a PGA TOUR event and getting an exemption straight into the U.S. Open! What a turnaround, right? This will be his fourth U.S. Open appearance. His sole made cut was a T63 back in 2011, right after he turned pro. This is the definition of never giving up, and it's awesome to watch.

The Full Field is Set for Shinnecock Hills

So, with Poston and Cauley jumping into exempt spots, the USGA added five alternates from the final qualifying: Hennie Du Plessis, Spencer Tibbits, Bryan Lee, Jack Schoenberger, and Harry Higgs. Plus, we’ve got Preston Stout, a 21-year-old out of Dallas, who earned his exemption on June 1 by winning the NCAA Division I Championship. And Chandler Phillips, 29, of Bryan, Texas, is making his U.S. Open debut, stepping in for Marco Penge after he withdrew. This is big for Phillips, who was the first alternate from the Dallas qualifier. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, one of the USGA’s founding member clubs, is the place to be. It's legendary, having hosted this national championship in three different centuries already. We're talking 1896, 1986, 1995, 2004, and 2018. Get ready for some classic golf. The field is complete, the stories are already legendary, and we're ready for the 126th U.S. Open to kick off! It's going to be a battle, and you know us Seattle sports fans will be watching every shot. Let's go!
