Few NFL draft prospects arrive with the kind of immediate hype and expectation that surrounded Joe Burrow. After a legendary 2019 season at LSU, where he rewrote record books, won the Heisman Trophy in a landslide, and led the Tigers to a National Championship, Burrow was the undeniable top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals, holding the first overall selection, wasted no time in making the superstar quarterback the face of their franchise on April 23, 2020. It was a moment that instantly injected hope and excitement into a fanbase hungry for a turnaround.
Burrow's Early NFL Trajectory: Highs and Hurdles
Burrow's rookie year was a testament to his toughness and potential, even amidst difficult circumstances. Thrown into the starting role for a rebuilding Bengals team, he quickly demonstrated his poise, accuracy, and leadership. He showed flashes of brilliance, completing over 65% of his passes and throwing for 13 touchdowns in 10 starts. However, his promising debut season was tragically cut short in Week 11 against the Washington Football Team when he suffered a devastating ACL and MCL tear, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. It was a brutal setback, but one that revealed Burrow's resilience and determination to return stronger.
And return stronger he did. The 2021 season saw a fully recovered Joe Burrow lead an improbable resurgence for the Bengals. Defying all expectations, Burrow guided Cincinnati to an AFC North title, their first playoff win in 31 years, and an astonishing run to Super Bowl LVI. Along the way, he showcased his uncanny ability to perform under pressure, earning the moniker "Joe Cool" for his calm demeanor in clutch moments. He finished the regular season with an impressive 4,611 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, cementing his status as one of the league's brightest young stars and proving the Bengals' draft day decision was more than justified.
