Johnny Cardoso Heading for Surgery, Won't Make the World Cup

The USMNT just lost a crucial midfielder weeks before the World Cup kicks off, and it's a blow that could reshape how Mauricio Pochettino approaches the tournament. Johnny Cardoso is expected to miss the competition after undergoing ankle surgery, according to reporting from May 8.

The Injury Hits at the Worst Possible Time

Cardoso went down with an ankle injury just over a month before World Cup play begins. The surgery he's undergoing signals this isn't something he'll recover from in time to contribute on the biggest stage. For a national team counting down the days until competition starts, losing a midfielder of Cardoso's caliber is the kind of gut punch that forces you to rethink your entire approach to the tournament.

What This Means for the USMNT Going Forward

Pochettino and the USMNT coaching staff now have to scramble to figure out how to replace Cardoso's presence in the middle of the field. The squad was already under pressure to prove it could compete at a World Cup on home soil. Losing a key playmaker weeks before the tournament actually starts makes that mountain steeper. The team will need someone to step up and fill that void, and finding that solution before the first whistle blows is now a pressing priority.

The 12s are going to be watching closely to see how the USMNT adapts. This is the kind of injury that shapes tournaments. Next up for the national team is getting the roster right and making sure whoever steps in is ready for the moment.
