LSU's Cornerbacks Are Already SEC Elite, And College Football Better Brace For Impact

Man, you guys gotta hear this. We all know LSU has been DBU forever, right? Think Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Morris Claiborne back in the day, legends! Last year, Mansoor Delane was tearing it up as an All-American before heading to the NFL. You’d think that would slow things down a bit, but nope. LSU's got a cornerback duo, DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland, and trust me, they're not merely ready for the SEC, they might be the best in the whole damn country. No joke.

DJ Pickett: Freshman Phenom Mode, Activated

Pickett, a five-star recruit in 2025, wasted zero time making his presence felt. We're talking true freshman stuff here, folks. He played man coverage on a ridiculous 41.9% of his reps. That wasn’t simply high, that was the highest rate in the entire SEC! And get this, his coverage grade in man? A blistering 76.2, good for No. 5 in the conference. For a guy fresh out of high school? That's not just "elite," it's straight-up disrespectful to opposing QBs. He didn't only stake a spot in the rotation, he owned it. This kid is built different.

PJ Woodland: The Ultimate Swiss Army Knife Is Unleashed

Don't sleep on PJ Woodland either. While Pickett was getting some shine, Woodland was out there doing everything for defensive coordinator Blake Baker. "Swiss Army Knife" doesn't even begin to cover it. He lined up at corner, slid into the slot, and even dropped back to play some safety. After a quiet freshman year, he found his groove as a sophomore, racking up 614 snaps. PFF gave him a 74.0 defensive grade, which is solid, but it’s the sheer versatility that makes him so crucial. This dude can do it all, and Baker knows it.

LSU's Defense: Top Five Dreams Start Here

Here’s the thing, though: LSU’s depth at corner is a bit of a question mark. That means Pickett and Woodland are gonna be on the field non-stop. And honestly? That's probably a good thing. More snaps, more chances to ball out, which means their All-SEC and All-American cases are absolutely going to get stronger as the season rolls on. Baker isn't solely hoping for the best, he’s trusting these guys on an island. Few teams in the SEC can win in man coverage like LSU is positioned to with these two. They’re already proven at the SEC level, folks, this isn’t merely projection. LSU isn't solely dreaming of a good defense, they’re envisioning a top-five unit in college football, and it all starts with these two shutting down receivers week in and week out. So yeah, get ready. Pickett and Woodland aren't just names, they're foundational pieces for a defense that could absolutely dominate. This isn't merely about a good season, it's about seeing two young guys cement themselves as the best in the business. Keep your eyes peeled, because what these two are about to do for LSU is going to be legendary.
