He played for the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the AJHL before making his mark in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Portland Winterhawks and then the Edmonton Flyers. It was in these junior leagues that Messier truly began to forge his identity as a dominant power forward – showcasing a potent blend of skill, physicality, and a burgeoning leadership presence that would define his Hall of Fame career.
His impressive junior hockey performance didn't just catch the eye of NHL scouts; it led him to an unconventional early professional experience. Before officially being drafted into the NHL, Messier even played a handful of games in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with his hometown Edmonton Oilers at just 17 years old. This brief stint against professional competition, even before the NHL draft, accelerated his development immensely. By the time the NHL came calling, drafting him 48th overall in 1979, Messier was already a seasoned talent, ready to make an immediate impact without ever setting foot in a college lecture hall.
