Mike McDaniel Has One Goal With Justin Herbert: Let Him Own the Position

The Los Angeles Chargers brought in Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator, and he's wasting zero time laying out exactly what he wants to do with Justin Herbert. McDaniel didn't mince words on Friday when he outlined his master plan: he wants Herbert to play the best football of his career by refining the fundamentals that separate good quarterbacks from elite ones.

The McDaniel Blueprint

During a conversation with reporters in El Segundo, McDaniel explained that his focus is dialed in on three specific areas: Herbert's footwork, his timing, and his anticipation. These aren't flashy talking points. They're the nuts and bolts of quarterback play, the kind of stuff that separates a Pro Bowler from someone who just looks like one on Sundays.

"He has the capability of mastering every tool in the toolbox," McDaniel said. The message is clear: Herbert has all the talent in the world. Now it's about unlocking it in a way that lets him actually control the game from start to finish.

What This Means for Herbert

McDaniel's not just talking about incremental improvement. He's talking about Herbert owning the position in a way he hasn't before. Think about what that looks like: a quarterback who commands the offense with precision timing, reads defenses faster, and gets the ball out with picture-perfect mechanics. That's what McDaniel is building toward.

With Jim Harbaugh calling the shots as head coach, the Chargers are signaling they're serious about maximizing Herbert's prime years. This isn't a long-term rebuild. This is a championship window opening right now, and McDaniel's job is to make sure Herbert plays his best football when it matters most.
