Nick Nurse Steps Away From 76ers to Say Goodbye to His Brother

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse left the team Tuesday to attend his brother's funeral, but the NBA world got word he'll be back on the sideline before Game 2 tips off Wednesday night. That's the kind of timeline nobody wants to navigate, but Nurse is pushing through it.

A Family Loss, a Coach's Duty

Steve Nurse, Nick's brother, passed away last Wednesday at age 62. The funeral service followed his unexpected death, and Nurse made the call to be there for his family during one of the hardest weeks imaginable. For a head coach in the middle of a playoff series, that's not an easy decision to make, but it's the right one. Family comes first, always.

Back on the Bench Before the Next Tip

Despite the personal tragedy, Nurse is expected to return to lead the 76ers into Game 2 on Wednesday night. That's a quick turnaround, but Nurse clearly wants to be with his team as they navigate this series. It speaks to his character that he's able to compartmentalize grief and get back to work so fast.

The 76ers will need their leader back in the building. These are the moments that test a team's character, and having Nurse present sends a message: we're focused, we're ready, and we're moving forward together.
