Nick Suzuki, Brock Nelson, Anthony Cirelli Named Finalists for the NHL's Toughest Defensive Award

The Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded annually to the league's best defensive forward, has its finalists and it's a tight race. Nick Suzuki, Brock Nelson, and Anthony Cirelli are the three candidates vying for the honor that recognizes excellence in the defensive end of the ice.

This award is no joke, either. The Selke goes to the forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive aspects of play, and the NHL isn't handing it out to anyone. These three guys have put in serious work all season long to separate themselves from the rest of the league's forwards.

Three Names That Define Defensive Excellence

Suzuki, Nelson, and Cirelli represent the full spectrum of what it means to be a modern two-way forward in today's NHL. They're not just scoring goals and racking up assists, though. These finalists have made it their mission to shut down opposition and make life difficult for other teams' offenses night in and night out.

The competition for this award is fierce every year, and 2026 is no exception. Voters will have to carefully weigh the contributions of all three candidates as they determine who takes home the hardware.

What's Next

The winner will be announced soon, and one of these three will join an exclusive club of forwards who've earned the Selke. For Seattle hockey fans keeping tabs on the league's elite two-way talent, this is one award worth paying attention to as the final votes come in.
