Many fans of the Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic might wonder which college helped mold him into the two-time NBA MVP we know today. However, unlike many American NBA players, Jokic did not attend a traditional four-year university or play college basketball in the NCAA system. Instead, his formative years were spent developing through the demanding professional club system in his native Serbia.
From Serbian Courts to NBA Glory
Jokic's journey began early within European basketball. He joined Mega Vizura (now Mega Basket or Mega Leks) in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2012, at just 17 years old. It was here, competing against grown men and seasoned professionals in both the Serbian League and the regional Adriatic League (ABA League), that his unique skillset truly blossomed. He progressively earned more playing time, honing his incredible passing vision, soft touch around the rim, and rebounding prowess against high-level European competition.
His breakout season came in 2014-2015, the year after he was famously drafted 41st overall by the Nuggets (during a Taco Bell commercial, no less). That year, still with Mega Leks, Jokic dominated the ABA League, averaging 15.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, earning him the prestigious ABA League MVP award. This incredible performance showcased his readiness for the NBA, proving that his unconventional pathway through professional European basketball was just as effective, if not more so, in preparing him for the global stage. His time in Serbia gave him invaluable experience and a unique basketball IQ that continues to defy traditional expectations.
