Before he was a Super Bowl MVP, before the no-look passes and the incredible comebacks became a staple of Sundays, Patrick Mahomes was lighting up scoreboards in Lubbock, Texas. Mahomes chose to attend Texas Tech University, joining the Red Raiders in 2014. Coming out of Whitehouse High School, he was a highly touted two-sport athlete, excelling in both football and baseball, even drawing attention from MLB scouts. However, it was on the gridiron where his future truly lay.
Mahomes's Red Raider Rise
While his freshman year saw him split time between the baseball diamond and the football field, Mahomes eventually committed full-time to football, and the results were spectacular. Under coach Kliff Kingsbury’s pass-heavy spread offense, Mahomes’s raw talent began to blossom. He showcased the cannon arm, the uncanny ability to extend plays, and the improvisational genius that would later define his NFL career. His sophomore and junior seasons were statistical marvels, though the team's overall success sometimes lagged. He routinely put up eye-popping numbers, including a record-tying 734 passing yards in a single game against Oklahoma, a contest where he also threw for five touchdowns.
Mahomes’s time at Texas Tech wasn't just about statistics; it was about refining the unique skillset that made him such a compelling prospect. He learned to read defenses at an elite pace while simultaneously developing the confidence to trust his instincts and make unconventional plays. By the end of his junior year in 2016, having thrown for over 5,000 yards and 41 touchdowns, he declared for the NFL Draft. Though some analysts questioned how his freewheeling style would translate, the foundation of an NFL superstar had been undeniably laid in the heart of West Texas.
