Before becoming one of the most dominant defensive players in NFL history, Reggie White's path to professional football was anything but conventional. Often referred to as the "Minister of Defense," White didn't go through the traditional NFL Draft process that most legends do. Instead, after a stellar collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, White began his professional journey in the rival United States Football League (USFL).
An Unconventional Path to NFL Stardom
White was initially drafted by the Memphis Showboats in the 1983 USFL Draft. He played two seasons with the Showboats, showcasing his incredible pass-rushing skills and making a significant name for himself, even in the burgeoning league. When the USFL began to falter, an opportunity arose for its star players to enter the NFL. This led to the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft of USFL and CFL players, where the Philadelphia Eagles shrewdly selected White with the fourth overall pick.
Reggie White officially joined the Eagles in 1985, and his impact was immediate and profound. In just 14 games during his NFL rookie season, he racked up an astonishing 13 sacks, signaling to the entire league that a new force had arrived. His explosive power, relentless pursuit, and unique ability to shed blockers quickly established him as a premier defensive end. White's early career with the Eagles was a masterclass in disruption, laying the foundation for a Hall of Fame career defined by record-breaking sacks and unparalleled defensive prowess.
