The Lottery Balls Fell and Toronto Got the Cosmic Laugh of a Lifetime
Well, this is absolutely wild. The NHL draft lottery just handed the Toronto Maple Leafs the most insane gift after what looked like a total disaster. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, Toronto's first-rounder came in top-five protected, which meant they were sitting pretty for a rebuild pick. And wouldn't you know it, the 12 ball popped up the chute, and the Leafs are going first overall in the 2026 NHL draft.
So what does that mean for the rest of the league? Vancouver Canucks fans are absolutely eating dirt right now. They finished dead last in the entire league and they're stuck at third overall. The San Jose Sharks, who actually have some seriously talented young players already on the roster, jumped up to second. The Pacific Division just got messier in a way that's got to sting for the Canucks.

Now that the lottery dust has settled, the mock draft talk is heating up. The first ranking being used is largely driven by projections modeling, which means we're going to see a lot of data-heavy analysis around who goes where and why. The selections coming up will factor in best player available, what teams actually need, and how it all fits their timeline moving forward.
As the draft gets closer, expect a new ranking that brings in the eye test and real anecdotal stuff from scouts and front offices. That'll be followed by a mock draft that gets way closer to what actually happens on draft day. Right now though, we're in the projection phase, and Toronto getting that first overall pick after everything that's happened? That's the kind of lottery karma that defines how people remember draft night.
